Castello di Gropparello, Paderna, San Pietro in Cerro
Piacenza's territory is studded with strongholds, castles, noble mansions, many of which are open to the public.
Each building has its own unique history to tell.
Intriguing family matters, adventures of valiant leaders, wise patrons, sad lovers still wandering about looking for peace of mind are still fascinating stories that lead visitors on a mysterious journey.
The visiting path along Piacenza hills can be done by car or with a private bus, also in a single day. The journey starts in Gropparello Castle.
Immersed in the greenish Val Vezzeno, on a protruding rock of green serpentine upon the river, the castle was built in the 8th century. It has an irregular structure which makes it a special example in the history of fortified buildings. The tour is suitable for children as well because the surrounding woods has been adapted to host the "Parco delle Fiabe": here children, dressed as knights and helped out by guides, can discover the traces of fairies, gnomes and witches. At the Taverna Medievale it is possible to take part in delicious banquets with animation and attendands wearing medieval costumes.
Travelling for 20 km there is Paderna Castle with its austere profile, solid walls and a moat. Its existence is documented since the beginning of the 9th century, in the 15th century becomes an elegant fortified castle, with a large court. Today it belongs to a family and there is a biological farm with orchard and garden, often hosting events dedicated to agriculture.
Another 30 minutes trip and you can reach San Pietro in Cerro Castle bordering the province of Parma and Cremona. The castle is open to the public and offers 30 rooms richly furnished, two large halls,  kitchens and dungeons. In the attic there is the mim, Museum in Motion, a collection that cyclically exhibits masterpieces from contemporary authors, both Italian and foreign. In the place used to store carriages, inside the park, there is a charming hotel to spend the night.
