On Saturday 13rd and Sunday 14th April 2019 the third edition of Open Gate begins, the initiative organised by Sogin to open the gates of decommissioning nuclear plants to citizens.

This event follows the incredible success of 2015: over 3,000 visitors will have the chance to visit, if they register on within 31ST MARCH 2019, to know the means and technologies adopted by Sogin to decommission nuclear plants and manage radioactive waste.

The initiative, much like in the previous edition, involves the four nuclear plants of Trino (Vercelli), which reached the world record of full steam work; Caorso (Piacenza), the largest in Italy; Latina, the first-born Italian nuclear plant that has also been the most powerful in Europe when it started working; and finally Garigliano (Caserta), designed by Riccardo Morandi, with its characteristic 'sphere' that encloses the reactor.

For the nuclear plants of Saluggia, Trino, Caorso and Garigliano, two visits are available: a "monitored zone" and a "industrial area". For Latina the non-monitored zone is the only one available.

The “monitored zone” inside a nuclear plant is a working area where access - due to ionizing radiations - is regulated by specific procedures and is forbidden to underage visitors. The "industrial area" is open to underage visitors provided they are accompanied by adults. Children as young as 6 years old can access the plants.

All visits last about two hours and are guided by Sogin technicians that will tell the story of these unique industrial plants, and the work they carry out daily with the objective of decommissioning nuclear plants in Italy.
